What are BCAA’s?

BCAA’s (branched chain amino acids) are amino acids which you can only gain through nutrition. Your body still needs them just as hard as all the other amino acids but they are just a lot harder to gain because your body doesn’t make them on its own.

The function of BCAA’s
BCAA’s are the building blocks of every protein molecule. These molecules build muscle and replace other cells in your body. If there is a shortage of BCAA’s in your body, your body will have to burn muscle to keep having enough of them.

BCAA Supplementation
You can also gain BCAA’s through supplementation. If it is difficult for you to eat enough food it is a good idea to start supplementing. If you spend a lot of time on exercising, it will be almost impossible to gain enough BCAA’s through food so supplementation almost becomes essential.

How much and when should you take BCAA supplements?
You should take 5 to 10 grams of BCAA’s timed around your workout. This can include prior to, during and/or after your workout. Have you seen people at the gym holding shaker bottles filled with a coloured beverage? This is most likely a BCAA drink.
